걸리다 = to catch (a disease) 

감기 = cold

목 = throat 
       목이 아파요 = I have a sore throat

코 = nose
       코 막힘에요 = Blocked nose

콧물 = nasal mucus
       콧물이 나오다 = to have a runny nose

열이 있다 = to have a fever
        열이 있어요 = I have a fever

재채기 = sneeze
       재채기가 나오다 = to have a fit of sneezing

아파요 = Hurt / Sick (아프다 = Sick Painful)

감기약 = Cold Medicine 
       감기약 먹었어요 = I took cold medicine  (먹다 = eat)

자다 = sleep

Translation:

Korean through English Book 2

My Sunday Korean class, starts a new term next week, and yesterday we had a pre-term enrollment type session. At the end of the last term there was only one student - 'me' and we started the Sogang 2b book.  I enjoyed studying the first chapter and worked quite hard studying the vocabulary and completing the extra work book tasks.  But the new term sees new students and a change of teachers, I have been moved to a new group with a new teacher, which will be a conversation class.  I don't mind as it will be good to have some conversation practise.

The conversation class will be based on a 'new' book Korean through English by Sang Oak lee.  i was surprised to see the book on the table as I have this book although I never studied it.  I bought this book about 10 years ago, when I got home and checked the book my which  has written some translations for me in it, so at some point I must have attempted to study it. I think it was too hard at the time.  Now, it seems okay - there are lots of new vocabulary and it will be interesting to see how the conversation class is formed out of the book's text.  I am going to need to study a lot before each class to try and keep up with it.

And here is the text we will use, for the conversation class - The text is quite short, first i plan to read it until I understand it, and then memorize some of the sentences, then try to write my own opinion sentences.  Lots to do before Sunday!!!

There is an English translation, but I am trying to read it - YET!

딱 걷기에 좋은 날씨 - Perfect walking weather

During my lunchtime walk today, I learned the expression "딱 걷기에 좋은 날씨".
Which means "Perfect Walking Weather"

At first I was quite confused as I misheard 딱 걷기 as 닭고기 (Chicken) Good weather 
- Oh how they laughed (at my expense (not really - just a bit)) 

But it seemed logical to me as on the first and last day of summer Korean people eat Chicken soup Samgyetang (See picture) so it kind of made sense that on a day like today "오늘은 날씨가 엄청 좋다!" ("Today the weather is really Good") that chicken would be involved somewhere...


So I got the expression explained and broken down for me...

Vocabulary

딱 = Perfect 걷기에 = Walking 좋은 = Good 날씨 = Weather

So "딱" - is a really useful word which can kind of be translated to 'perfectly'/'Properly'/'Suitably'


So I was advised to add this to the beginning other sentences/expressions

"딱 좋아!" = Perfectly Good!

And So on... which is 딱 좋아!

Korean language contains lots of English words for things such as 커피테이블 (Coffee table), 컴퓨터 (Computer), 박스 (Fax) 스테이플러 (Stapler), 프로젝트 (project), I am curious how non-native Korean speakers pronounce English words like these, that are used in Korean.

The pronunciation can be quite different and I have heard Korean people pronounce with the English pronunciation (perhaps to show their English ability) and the Korean (perhaps because it is more natural).

But one thing that sticks in my mind is - when a Korean friend (Who speaks little English) was talking about her husbands long working hours, I used the expression "와우, 그는 슈퍼맨입니다!" = "Wow, he is superman!" - I pronounced "superman" as you would in English - the Korean friend couldn't understand me.
So, My wife translated saying "와우, 그는 슈퍼맨입니다!" with Superman pronounced like "shu-pa-men". And she understood immediately.

I found this amusing as to me it was exactly what I said... of course there maybe more complex linguistic reasons, but the word super is English and so is man, so to say that the friend was unaware that it was an English word doesn't to my mind, account for it.

Another example, at work we had Pizza, a colleague described the flavour "이 피자는 4치즈입니다" "This pizza is 4 cheese Pizza" - "이 피자 페퍼로니입니다" This Pizza is pepperoni" Pizza pronounced with Korean inflection - Pi-Cha, pepperoni and four cheese with a perfect "American" accent.

So how do you pronounce English words used in Korean?

At work should I say "이 프로젝트는..." or "이 Project는"

Same goes for Emails should I write 이 프로젝트는 or 이 Project는?

What's your opinion?

Office Conversation

ME: 혹시 O주임님, O사장님이 다음주에는 출장 갈겁니다?
Miss Park: 네
ME: 어디 가요?
Miss Park: 26일, 화요일에는 일본 가요. 수요일부터 토요일 싱가포르 갈 거요
ME: 네, 감사합니다!

Considering I work in an office where everybody else is Korean, I speak surprisingly little Korean during the day.  But, take the opportunity when I can - this conversation was easy for me - comfortable with all the vocab (Maybe some spelling mistakes ㅋㅋㅋ).

And I know there are some mistakes in the following email, Actually I didn't send this email (i sent it in English) but thought I would practice by writing it in korean.  I posted it to LingRing and waiting for corrections...

Ok - So yesterday's post was an April Fool's day Joke... Sorry I know it was not funny, but t least I tried...

After a 4 week absence from Korean class for various reason (wife in hospital, other events~, stuff that just happens!) I returned to the Sogang Korean class at GEM on Sunday. There are now 3 of us in the class so I get to feel even worse about being bottom of the class... but I am hoping it will inspire me... hoping...

There is stuff I know in the class but I just can't process it quick enough... the new teacher's style is very quick and I don't think it is helping me... I think I need to do the book work before the class so that at least I know it (even with some mistakes) and use the class for practice...

So I started my homework early this week as I need to review Sunday's 5 pages and next weeks 5 pages...

How am I ever going to manage...? ...  I have so many opportunities to learn, speak and interact in Korean that I am just missing - I need to get over the fact that whenever I speak Korean, people laugh - I know they don't mean it in a horrible way but it is SO demoralizing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Although not quite as demoralizing as reading a story (in Korean) to my 5 year old daughter for her homework and her correcting me (Even though she can't yet read) - I had to call my son to settle one dispute as on that occasion I knew I was right!
